Ocular Melanoma Embolization
A Specialized Treatment for Metastatic Eye Cancer
Ocular, or uveal, melanoma is the most common primary cancer of the eye in adults. While treatment of the primary tumor may be successful, the disease can sometimes spread, most often to the liver. When this occurs, targeted liver-directed therapy can help slow the disease and improve quality of life.
At Image Guided Therapy, Dr. Charles Nutting provides a highly specialized, minimally invasive embolization procedure for patients with metastatic ocular melanoma. This treatment uses image-guided precision to deliver therapy directly to the tumor site, minimizing side effects and downtime.
Dr. Nutting works directly with your primary oncologist in a collaborative fashion to optimize your treatment. He has experience working with oncologists locally but also nationally.
What Is Embolization for Ocular Melanoma?
Embolization is a minimally invasive treatment that delivers therapy to metastatic tumors in the liver. Using advanced imaging, Dr. Nutting inserts a thin catheter through a tiny incision in the groin and navigates it to the tumor’s blood supply.
Once in place, microscopic particles or therapeutic agents are released to treat the tumor. This slows or halts tumor growth and may help relieve symptoms.
Depending on your diagnosis, Dr. Nutting may recommend the following therapies:
- Immunoembolization
- Radioembolization (Y-90)
- Chemoembolization
- Patients with ocular (uveal) melanoma that has spread to the liver
- Individuals not eligible for surgical resection
- Patients whose oncology team recommends regional therapy for disease control
- Targeted therapy directly to the tumor
- Minimally invasive approach with quick recovery
- Reduced systemic side effects
- Repeatable for ongoing disease management
- May slow tumor progression and improve quality of life
